This painting was inspired by a mathematical division of the plane in alternating red and blue lines on a light grey background. I added red and blue squares to some of the intersection points. Any red square has a blue cross on it, and blue square has a red cross on it.
To create the illusion of depth, I added darker grey to some light grey areas in a curved way. then I added another shade of grey to make shadows for the squares.
The areas that have a shadow of a square as well as the curved shadow have a total of four different shades of grey.
When viewed from a distance, there is an illusion of depth that has tricked many viewers.
