Small Staked Bench

December 3, 2018 Rudy Everts

I had taken a beautiful leftover piece of ash home after my class with Chris Schwarz, in the hopes of finding a perfect project for it. Eventually it came to me that the thing was almost the right size for making a saw bench. Though I already have a saw bench, it is never bad… Continue reading Small Staked Bench

I wanted to use this piece of wood for a sculpture, but there was a big knot in it.
I bought this relief carving off ebay a little white ago. There was no information where it was from, what is depicted or its age so I asked Suzanne Ellison if she could tell me more about it. She wrote back with a wealth of information so I wrote a blog post about it. The link is in my bio.
I received a beautiful print today from @mollybrown.ink . Depicted are the Ty Canol woods in Wales, the colors there inspired chairmaker John Brown to create his green “Spirit of Wales” finish. I love the print Molly, thanks so much.
Now look at this beauty of a chair. It is apparently from Ireland. If you want to read more about it, head over to the @lostartpress blog to read a new chair chat™ with Chris, Klaus @klaus_skrudland and myself. Any feedback, here or on the blog, is highly appreciated!
I haven't carved a bowl in a while. I roughed this one out about 5 years ago and finally got around to finishing it. Better late than never!
Shaving the bark off of green oak with a razor sharp draw knife is one of the most satisfying things to do. I am using an old pre-1930 Fuchs draw knife, from the same factory as Peter Follansbee's hatchet. Can't beat its edge life and ease of sharpening. Also, this oak is perfectly straight so perfect for chair parts. Happy times.
